Many
Metro Detroit homeowners are falling for the oldest tricks
in the business. "Tin Man" tactics are still widely
used in the window and siding selling industry. The owner
of CUSTOM VINYL WINDOWS AND SIDING, INC. in Warren, MI.,
says that unknowing consumers are being taken advantage
of everyday by these types of sales schemes. Many salespeople
use such phrases as "I can only give you this deal
tonight." Or "Tomorrow the price goes back up"
to verbally pressure unsuspecting customers to buy. "If
the price is good tonight, it should be good in the morning,
next week or even next month".
Some
start with a very highly inflated retail price, and then
use large "drops" to bring the price down. Some
commonly used "drops" are huge money-off coupons,
discounts for putting signs in yards, and also manufacturer's
rebates. There isn't any manufacturer that offers rebates
on windows and siding. Finally 30, 40, and 50-year guarantees,
which cover all parts and materials, are never offered by
the manufacturer. Guarantees as such, come strictly from
retailers. "If they should go out of business, where
is your manufacturer's warranty?"
"With
their kind of guarantees, when the manufacturer's warranty
runs out, how long is the retailer going to stay in business
to serve you?" There are many tricks the general public
falls for, but have faith. There are still good companies
out there. We recommend that a salesperson should give their
best price first. Also find out how long the company has been
in business and call the State Department of Commerce at (900-555-8374)
to check their record. This is a good way to gage trustworthiness.
Most importantly make sure all warranties and guarantees come
from the manufacturer of the windows and siding, so you'll
have protection even if the retailer closes shop.
